Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) Russian/French (1896-1964)

Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, is considered one of the finest artists of his time and called 'the father of the Art Deco (1919-1939) era'.

Starting his career as a fashion designer, Erté became a multi faceted artist working in theatre, sculpture and illustration.

Between 1915 and 1935 Erté contributed monthly illustrations to Harper's Bazaar, spanning over 2000 pieces, creating the recognizable style of the magazine.

Erté is also well-known for the gloriously extravagant costumes and stage sets that he designed for the Folies-Bergère in Paris, and George White’s Scandals in New York.

At the age of 75, Erté began recreating his 2-dimensional works into bronze sculptures.

In 1976, he was awarded the title of Officer of Arts and Letters, and in 1982 the Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris by the French government.

Erté works can be found in the permanent collections of prestigious museums throughout the world including New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum.
