USD $20,000

Pierre Auguste Cot (French, 1837–1883) was a prominent painter of the Academic Classicism movement. He achieved immense popularity during the 19th century for his highly refined technique, idealized romantic subjects, and portraiture.

His two most famous paintings, Springtime (Le Printemps, 1873) and The Storm (La Tempête, 1880) hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York city.

Cot began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse before moving to Paris, where he studied under some of the most influential academic masters of the era, including William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Alexandre Cabanel. His style closely mirrors Bouguereau's emphasis on clean lines, smooth skin tones, and idealized human forms.

He debuted at the Paris Salon in 1863. His commercial success grew rapidly, earning him the prestigious title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1874.

This delightful painting depicts a young girl sitting in nature, listening to the chirping of nearby birds.
